Why Your Facial Skin Gets Dry & Flaky (What to Do)

If itching and redness are also present, the problem may be an allergic reaction.  Even people with no allergies can have reactions to chemical compounds found in skincare products.
 
Exfoliating too frequently can cause excessive dryness and flaking.  Redness will usually be present, as well.

In some cases, people think the problem is a reaction to one of their skincare products, but they can't figure out which one.  Something that causes stinging or burning when it is applied is a likely suspect.

Ingredients in skincare products are among the common causes of flaky dry facial skin.  If the condition is isolated (there is no excessive dryness elsewhere on the body), it is the most likely cause.  It is actually a type of dermatitis, although redness and itching may not always be present or can vary in severity. 

Now, one of the less common causes is prescription medications.  Isotretinoin is an oral medication prescribed primarily for severe acne.  It has also been used to treat acne rosacea, xeroderma pigmentosa, harlequin ichthyosis, keratoses, some types of cancer and some very rare diseases.  If you were taking it, you would know.

If you are taking any kind of prescription medication and you notice flaky dry facial skin, you should read about the side effects or consult your pharmacist.
If the condition is present on other parts of your body, you could have psoriasis or eczema.  Psoriasis is typically accompanied by redness.  Eczema is typically accompanied by severe itching.

Type II diabetes is sometimes accompanied by an eczema-like condition minus the itching.  Other diseases can be a cause or a contributing factor.  If the problem persists, you should consult your doctor or dermatologist. 

Overexposure to sunlight or wind is a common cause of flaky dry facial skin.  It typically appears after the redness fades away.  It is often described as peeling.

If you have dandruff on your scalp, you may notice the same white flakes in your eyebrows that you see in your hair.  Men may notice it on their mustaches and beards.

The problem is sometimes a seasonal thing caused by low humidity.  Not drinking enough water can cause excessive dryness anywhere on the body, any time of the year.

Basic Symptom Description:
